Summary of Term 2
SOLARarity for the Environment
We held an event with EnergyZE (energyze.org.au) and our Year 7 & 8 students around ways in which we can make a difference for the environment by installing solar panels and batteries to our businesses and homes.
On the evening our students were featured with their presentation on their use of software SunSpot solar calculator website to assist families to identify the savings they could make by installing solar panels.

Another guest speaker on the evening Tony Chappel, the CEO of The NSW Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Along with sharing the value of individuals doing their part of the environment, Tony also shared that he was one of Northside Montessori School’s first students, having commenced his Primary schooling at Northside around 1978 when our school operated out of the garage of one of the parents, Tony’s best friends parents house. He was excited to see how our school has grown, and it was wonderful to see how he has gone on to work in a role which seeks to care for and protect our natural environment.
Thank you to all those who were involved in this wonderful event.

9-12 Poetry Night
The 9-12 poetry evening was a huge success. All of the students were very proud to show their poems and explain the many forms they have been learning about throughout the term. We congratulate all of the students on their originality and creativity.
NMUN at Terrigal
It was such a wonderful time at Terrigal with all the students and families who were participating in this year’s NMUN. All the students presented their speeches beautifully and were engaged in the discussions throughout the day. The topics for the day were Racism and also Global Warming. For each topic all students offered excellent suggestions for ways in which the world might tackle these significant issues. By the end of the day the students had developed a draft resolution for each topic being discussed.
Speeches
Students were paired together and each pair of students represented a country. Each of these students were required to research and prepare a speech based on the topics being presented at the conference. The two topics were Global Warming and Racism.
Those students who had prepared their speech for Racism presented their speeches in the morning, while those who had prepared for Global Warming did their speeches in the afternoon.
Country Boards
Representing their selected country, each pair of delegates are required to present a Country Board which highlights the features and characteristics of the country that they are representing. Students are required to research and summarise information on their country and present this in a clear and engaging manner. Information that can appear on a country board could be details about natural resources, political systems and government, flora and fauna, famous people, natural features of the country, currency, location, national dress, foods, climate and any other aspects of their country that they find interesting. The country Boards that our students prepared demonstrated the depth of work that they had undertaken and also provided all in attendance with some very interesting information about the countries represented by our students.
Thank you
Thank you to all our parents who supported their children to be involved in this program, and a special thank you to Margaret Kroeger, Margret Palma and Janene Johnson for all their effort in preparing the students for this event. We would like to also thank Sienna Farquhar (Alumni) and Shirley Farquhar (Northside parent) for their excellent support in running this event.
Working Bee
Thank you to all those families who attended the Working Bee on Sunday. It was a lovely day and a large number of projects were completed throughout the day. We are very grateful to all our parents who attend Working Bees each term. This effort 4 times a year makes a huge difference to keep our wonderful grounds looking good.
Montessori Athletics Carnival
What a wonderful day we had yesterday with the Montessori North of the Bridge Athletics Carnival. It was so good to have 6 schools come together cooperatively and share in this great day. The weather was perfect, and all the students enjoyed meeting others from the various other Montessori Schools around us. Thanks to all the parents who assisted on the day.

6-9 Students Visit Goat Island
The children of Cooinda and Gunyah enjoyed an exciting visit to Goat Island on Thursday. They enjoyed the ferry ride from Circular Quay to Goat Island and this was demonstrated by by their excitement.
On Goat Island, the children travelled back in time to the 18th century.. Here they were introduced to the life of a convict. They met an escaped convict, a soldier and the Governor. They enjoyed the opportunity to do role play activities and received a ‘Certificate of Freedom’ at the end of the day.
I think the 6-9 children have developed a greater appreciation for the comfortable life they lead.
